Question About H2b Visa Program

Mark asks…

h2b visa of beauty and love?

Hello I’m an Irish citizen, about to work as an unpaid production assistant on a small budget film in the USA;

I was just wondering, do you need to be receiving, PAID work to qualify for a h2b visa?

Best Answer:

Generally, only > paid < employment in the USA requires a work visa. Most types of volunteer work can be accomplished on the Visa Waiver Program as they count as Businees rather then Employment.

Note that if you are asked the reason for your visit at Passport Cojntrol you need to avoid using the word "work".as it could cause immediate confusion. "Volunteering on a film project" would probeblay be OK.

If you are actually visiting friends and you may help (at no pay) with something they may do then you are visiting friends.

You can only be in the USA for upto 90 days at a time on the VWP and you have to leave North America – going to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean doesn't count as "leaving" the USA for VWP purposes. Another requirement is that you must have on arrival a return or onward airline ticket leaving North America.

It's not required like the return/onward ticket, but it's a good idea to have with you at Passport Control copies of hotel & rental car reservations, and any other documentation your visit is temporary.

Check with your health insurance to find out if it covers you in the USA. If yes then take proof of coverage with you. If no or not sure then get trip medical insurance, which is cheap and sold by airlines & travel agents.
